Adopting a child with special needs requires love, commitment and a thorough understanding of your child’s craniofacial difference. Most families find it very helpful to schedule an appointment with Dr. Rhodes and Ms. Trivelpiece to discuss the potential needs of their child.
During a preadoption visit, Dr. Rhodes will review any medical records and photos. She will describe the possible treatment plans based on the child’s diagnosis, and explain what to expect as the child grows through adolescence. She and Ruth Trivelpiece will talk about some of the psychosocial and emotional issues especially when adopting a child from another country. You will also learn about any special feeding techniques and speech and language development for the toddler-aged child.
Once you are established at home with your child, an initial interdisciplinary team evaluation will be conducted.
